Five Principles Behind Thoughtful Event Styling

Strong event styling usually traces back to one clear anchor — a colour palette, a texture, or a feeling you want guests to have when they walk in. Everything else (linens, florals, signage, lighting) should support that anchor rather than compete with it.

A cohesive space often repeats a small number of colours, materials or shapes throughout the room, but with enough variation in scale and placement that it doesn't feel flat. Think of a palette carried from the welcome table through to the centrepieces and the dessert display, each interpreted slightly differently.

Tablescapes and installations benefit from a mix of heights — low and lush centrepieces alongside taller focal points — so the eye has somewhere to travel. Just as important is leaving some negative space; a table that is too densely styled can feel cluttered rather than elevated.

Beautiful styling still needs to function: guests need to see each other across the table, walk comfortably between seating, and find their place cards without searching. The best décor decisions consider the guest experience, not just how a space photographs.

Small, considered details — a monogrammed napkin fold, a handwritten place card, a consistent typography choice on signage — often do more to make an event feel personal than large statement pieces alone. We build these into our design and décor process for every event we style.
